Costa Ballena - The Safest Beaches in Costa Rica

Lifeguards #puravida #costaballenalovers #osa #travel

It’s a bold statement, but it IS achievable.

The Costa Ballena region is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Playa Dominical and Playa Hermosa are two of the most popular because they are easy to access, they are unencumbered by large private resorts, and stretch for miles along the coast. Tourists come from all over the world to swim, surf, boogie board, kayak, snorkel and SUP. The beaches are filled every holiday with local families enjoying some fun in the sun or just relaxing in the shade of an almond or coconut tree and watching the tides come and go.

BT41 Salvavidas Playa Hermosa #puravida #costaballenalovers #osa #travelAll this natural beauty and activity comes with danger as well. The Costa Ballena Lifeguards committee reports that the lifeguards at Playa Hermosa frequently rescue people caught in a rip current which can be deadly even for experienced swimmers. The average is at least one rescue per week, as well as dozens of warnings to beach-goers who are engaged in risky activity.

The rip currents at Playa Dominical can be even more dangerous because of the seasonally changing river mouth of the Rio Baru and generally larger surf swells. For the last several years, the lifeguard towers in Dominical have only been manned at times by volunteers, and tragically, there have been several drownings. Without the volunteers, this could have been much worse.

Paid, certified lifeguards save lives! The cost to operate a lifeguard tower, with 2 certified lifeguards 6 days a week, is roughly $20,000 per year per beach. Unfortunately, the local municipality and Costa Rican government are not able to contribute to this operating cost at this time, although they are starting to show interest.

The Costa Ballena Lifeguard committee recently started hosting monthly parties to raise the funds needed to continue the program at Hermosa and re-open the tower in Dominical. With the help of local business sponsors and donations from committed community members, the lifeguards are back on the beach every weekend in Dominical!

It is a great start, but there is still much more work to do. As more funds are raised, and more monthly commitments are confirmed, the committee will be able to expand the program in Dominical to full operation once again, as well as continue saving lives at Playa Hermosa.

Check the Ballena Tales events calendar to find out where and when the next Lifeguard Party is being held - come out and enjoy live music, drink specials and help us save lives!
