In addition to the opening of the annual national competition (Circuito National de Surf), clearly every surfer is eager to hit the greatest waves on Costa Rica’s beaches. With the 4th Tournament of the Circuit 2014, taking place on March 15th and 16th in Dominical, Costa Ballena, we would like to present the three best beaches for surfing enthusiasts.

The tournament at Playa Dominical is seen as a haven for Surfers, acknowledging the waves as probably the most enduring in Costa Rica. However, swimmers should be aware of strong currents and undertows, and especially are advised to keep aloof from the Barú River, which flows into the ocean at the North end of the beach and is habitat to crocodiles.

Playa Hermosa is considered an especially great place for beginner and intermediate Surfers, as the waves are not as powerful as in Dominical. Here again, visitors are requested to stay near the new life guard tower in Playa Hermosa, which makes this beach one of the safest in Costa Ballena, given the close watch of certified lifeguards.
