Sport fishing in Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Greetings From Beautiful Drake Bay, the #1 Place for Sport Fishing.

AUTOR: Captain Willy Atencio

As we enter the green season, expect slightly more chop on the water and a little more rain. On the bright side, the temperature is cooler and very comfortable. As a bonus, it’s the start of the Humpback migration, and we expect a lot of moms and babies to be in the waters of Drake Bay for a couple of months. Often they are very close to shore, right in the bay.

The fishing remains strong this time of year as the wahoos come around Cano Island. Wahoos are one of the fastest fish in the ocean, and their firm, white meat is delicious on the grill or as sashimi. The Wahoo will hit lures and live bait extremely hard. The Angler must keep reeling as these beautiful, powerful fish will often time swim right toward the boat.

In addition to Wahoo, our good friends, the Mahi-Mahi or Dorado, are usually here. One benefit of the rain is that it washes limbs, small logs, and palm fronds into the water. Because of the currents, this debris will stick together and form a weed line. This line is often many miles long. Mahi love to hang right along this weed line feeding on bait fish that use the line for protection and shade. I have many years of positioning the boat, so we put the bait right next to the weed line.

Inshore we also have a consistent Rooster bite (when the water is clean). Live bait and top-water are the way to target these bucket list fish. I have people who come from around the world to Drake Bay to participate in these sport fishing tours and catch these magnificent species. We also have anglers that specifically want to target Cubera Snapper. These freight trains are a lot of fun to catch and great to eat. We tell our clients to keep what they wish to eat and let the rest go for future generations.

The Offshore bite this time of year is usually not great for Sailfish but pretty good for Marlin. In Drake Bay, we have Blue, Black, and occasionally Striped Marlin. Once hooked, the Angler better be ready for the fight of his life. Remember, it's called sport fishing for a reason.
