Seizures

~ by Dr. Fernando Riera S.

Seizures or convulsions are the result of abnormal activity of the brain, in which neurons experience an imbalance in excitatory and inhibitory signals.

As a result, they produce an electrical charge that causes these convulsions.

In our daily medical practice, seizures are one of the main reasons for consultation or emergencies. Because a seizure is considered a symptom, its diagnosis is based on the patient’s medical background and lab tests results.

There are several causes for convulsions, and they can happen unexpectedly.

  1. Cardiovascular accidents, such as embolisms or brain hemorrhage.
  2. Encephalitis or meningitis cause by infections like distemper and ehrlichiosis.
  3. Congenital malformations, like hydrocephaly.
  4. Head trauma or injury that produces a swelling of the brain and the meninges.
  5. Metabolic diseases, hepatitis, anemia low glucose levels in the blood, and thyroid disorders, among others.
  6. Neoplasia or brain tumors, especially in dogs that are over 5 years old.
  7. Being exposed to chemicals, other hazardous materials or animals, such as pesticides, lead, or toads.
  8. Epilepsy, in which the patient experiences seizures for no apparent reason, or that have not been caused by any other chronic illness throughout the dog’s life.

There is not any test that can diagnose epilepsy; therefore, other possible causes must be ruled out.

Convulsions are very stressing episodes for both the animal and its owner. When this happens, you must immediately contact the veterinarian to ask for instructions. The treatment will be decided after a series of tests and complementary diagnoses.

What to do during a seizure?

  • Number 1: remain calm.
  • Never attempt to grab the dog.
  • Move away any objects that are nearby with which the animal could get hurt.
  • After the convulsion, carefully place the dog in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Administer the correct medication prescribed by the veterinarian.
