Scorpions

~ by Cesar Barrio Amorós

We live in a natural environment that has been modified for some time.

Luckily, there is still native fauna living here and sharing space with us (animals do it reluctantly, though). Many of us enjoy fauna and admiring wild animals; however, other animals such as spiders, cockroaches, and scorpions are not welcome. In Costa Ballena, there are various species of scorpions and the biggest and most abundant, the one we can find in any home or garden, hiding in the garbage or in the kitchen, in the bathroom or in wooden roofs, is the Centruroides bicolor, a big scorpion that has 2 colors.

Its body, claws, and distal segments of its tail are dark brown/blackish and the color of its legs and anterior segments is yellowish/beige.

In case of being stung by it, is there any danger?

Fortunately, this species is harmless, and even though getting stung can cause pain for a few minutes or hours, the pain eventually disappears. When this happens, apply some ice on the affected area. There are also some traditional home remedies that, when applied directly on the sting, get rid of the pain.

  • Clean the area with some ammonia;
  • Mix baking soda with water to produce a paste that helps to absorb the venom;
  • Apply mango leaves sap and drink mango juice.

If the swelling, the pain, or other symptons persist, see a doctor ASAP. The only way to grab a scorpion, dead or alive (it can still sting due to a reflex when its dead) is by taking it from the last segment of its tail, or the one before its stinger.
