During the last 12 years since the Foundation of the National Association of Lifeguards of Costa Rica, which is based in Grecia, Captain Luís Hidalgo has trained about 700 lifeguards.
Invited by Uvita Surf School and the Tecal Camp, he and his sergeant Mery Carranza came to Bahia to train 16 young people from Matapalo, Dominical, and Uvita on how to rescue swimmers.
The knowledge gained will not only be useful working at the beach, but in any aquatic environment.

The association is the best organized in all Central America, and its high technical standard courses attract students from other Spanish-speaking countries.
In hotels and beaches of Tamarindo, Parrita, Manuel Antonio, and Jaco, the lifeguard program is supported by the Trade and / or Development Associations, the Municipality, the Chamber of Tourism or the ICT (Costa Rican Chamber of Tourism), is the norm.
For the young men, the certification is a source of employment.
In the past 10 days, they have learned a lot more than tracing and rescuing swimmers in danger, give them first aid, and prepare them for a safe transfer.
This is the first project of its kind in the Southern Zone.
