Red wine - the new manna?

AUTHOR: Dagmar Reinhard

Red wine is rich in molecules with antioxidant effects, such as polyphenols among which resveratrol is found. These molecules can decrease and even block oxidative stress related to pathologies such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, or cancer.

Resveratrol is a natural compound present in red grapes and red wine. It has become famous for its possible health benefits. The consumption of the grape is recommended in itself; It is rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins, fibers and minerals, sugars, and beneficial substances such as flavonoids, tannins, and anthocyanins.

Further, numerous investigations have been carried out around a natural compound present in it: resveratrol.

In the 1960s, a study on seven European countries revealed that only France contradicted the thesis that higher consumption of saturated fat and cholesterol carries greater cardiovascular risk. This surprising result was renamed the "French paradox." It seemed that the consumption of red wine was a counterweight to the effects of the Frenchs' large intake of foie gras, butter, or cheeses. Resveratrol is a natural compound that is produced in the seed of the red grape, thus passing to the wine. Dark chocolate, berries, nuts, and almonds also contain it.

The first findings revealed the activation of a gene that ignited sirtuins, a class of enzymes to extend life.

In recent years, other properties that could be associated with resveratrol were added:

  • It can act in the brain like the natural messenger molecules of the cell. In this way, it can contribute to alleviating the effect of degeneration, including cell death.
  • Cancer prevention
  • Mild and moderate Alzheimer's: for the stabilization of a biomarker
  • Immune system stimulation
  • At the muscular level: preserves muscle fibers and helps protect the connections between neurons from aging.
  • For the arteries: by acting on aortic stiffness, you could reduce the blockage of the arteries.
  • Researchers recommend moderate wine consumption (two glasses a day).

Cheers!
