The Costa Rican history remembers him as a national hero and liberator for his heroic battle in 1856/1857 against the filibusters, obtaining the victory for Costa Rica and Central America.
The filibusters led by William Walker, unsuccessfully tried to seize Mexican territories. William Walker was an American politician, born on May 8, 1824 in Nashville, Tennessee. After the failed attempt in Mexico, the filibusters invaded Nicaragua, where William Walker took advantage of the civil war to assume power. When the neighboring countries were alerted, they launched an offensive attack to force him out of the territory, leading to Nicaragua’s National War and to Costa Rica’s National Campaign.

In 1857, William Walker abandoned Central American territory; however, he continued organizing new expeditions to seize Nicaragua. Luckily, he never fulfilled his dreams; he was arrested and executed in Honduras on September 12, 1860, when he was only 36 years old.Juanito Mora Beach
