The Tinamaste Farmer’s Market is joining the movement of zero single use plastic. To achieve this we must unite the efforts of sellers and customers who visit our Market every Tuesday. Little by little, seller by seller, we are in transition towards the elimination of single-use plastics. This has been a progressive effort that we started several months ago, in order to substitute plastic products such as straws and disposable cups by products made from compostable materials. Also, client by client, we have invited all the people who visit us to bring their own containers and reusable bags to make their purchases.
Most of our visitors bring their own reusable cloth bags, and this will facilitate the removal of plastic bags. Those people who want to buy their reusable bags, can get them at the same market. One of our vendors, Mayela sews bags from dog food sacks to create useful market bags. She also sews small cloth bags that are useful for storing delicate products such as tomatoes or vanilla. These bags are of excellent quality and can be used for several years; therefore they are a valuable investment that alleviates a great weight on our oceans and nature.
There is no valid excuse to defend single-use plastics. It is true that plastic bags are useful, for example when we need to load food separately or protection from contact with the outside. But we just have to open our eyes to new alternatives, to realize that to be part of this beautiful movement for the environment, the first thing we must review are our habits, and in this case it is as simple as getting our reusable cloth bags, both large and small, and have them on hand when we go shopping. The second step is to come to the Tinamaste Fair and fill them with organic, local and tasty products.
