Interview with a Biologist Specialized in Birds

~ by Dagmar Reinhard

What’s your occupation, Susana?  “I’m a biologist specialized in zoology.” Are you a specialist in birds? — “Yes. I carry out censuses and monitoring; I develop workshops for specialized guides and others for the public, and I’m a bilingual tour guide on fauna and indigenous cultures.”

Where do you work and why did you chose this area? — “I love the South Pacific’s rich biological and cultural diversity. My headquarters is in the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor, 20 minutes southeast of San Isidro, in the outskirts of Chirripó Mountain. I participate in local research projects and lead one-day tours from Dota to see quetzales, or even go to Ballena to see scarlet macaws.”

What can a birdwatcher or ornithologist see on a trip with you? — “With luck, up to 100 species in various landscapes and altitudes. Sometimes a client asks me to find a specific bird, for example an Emerald toucanet, a White-crested coquette, or a Turquoise cotinga, to take a picture or learn more about the bird’s natural history or behavior.”

Besides a wide myriad of tropical birds, what else does this region offer? — “In the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor there’s Dr. Skutch’s house museum. We have wonderful clean rivers with ponds for bathing, indigenous petroglyphs and pottery, an orchid garden, spectacular views over the Valley, sugar mills, integral farms, an aquarium, pottery workshops, and many agritourism activities.”

How long is a tour? —  “We have half-day and full-day tours.” Do you offer transportation and meals? — “Yes, with advance reservation.” What’s the weather like in the Biological Corridor? — “It’s temperate, in the dry season it ranges between 27°C during the day and 15°C between 12 am and 5am. Sleeping in cool weather is awesome!”

Any special requirements? — “When making a reservation for the tour, clients will be asked about their physical condition and dietary restrictions.”
