Good News from the Lifeguards Tower

Lifeguards

By Nate Bright

In May 2015, the Costa Ballena Lifeguards Committee was sworn-in as an official committee of the Municipality and ADI (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Uvita-Bahía.)

The Costa Ballena Lifeguards are currently operating at Playa Hermosa and have rescued 22 people so far this year.

The lifeguard program started on this beach at the beginning of 2014; it has thus far been operating exclusively on donations from the community and by volunteers who donate time and materials. With our new official not-for-profit status, we are able to apply to the Municipality for assistance with supplies, equipment, and additional training.

This status also means that local businesses and individuals who donate money can request their receipts and deduct donations from their taxes.

The lifeguard station at Playa Hermosa is currently operating six days a week (Tuesday – Sunday), at an annual cost of approximately $20,000. Our new official status has made the idea of expansion possible, not just at Playa Hermosa, but at other busy local beaches as well. We envision the day when we can say that Costa Ballena has the safest beaches in Costa Rica!

It’s now even easier to help us SAVE LIVES! Secure online monthly donations of $10, $20, or more can be made through Paypal by visiting: www.lifeguardscostaballena.com
