Fresh At The Feria: Salt
~ by Luba Nikolayev
Salt, the magical ingredient that makes flavors come alive, was once called “White Gold” by the Romans and for good reasons.
Every cell in our body needs salt to function, and giving the body the right kind makes a critical difference to our health. Natural salts like Himalayan and unrefined sea salt give the body important nutrients to keep us alive. Using salt has numerous benefits: regulating blood pressure, alkalizing the body, balancing sugar levels, enhancing nutrient absorption, strengthening bones, and providing the body with essential minerals it needs to thrive.
To reap all the health benefits, it's important to consume natural salts.
Table salt, for example, is a manufactured form of sodium chloride and is mostly sourced from crude oil extract (leftover oil flakes) heated to temperatures of 1200 ºF. Toxins such as fluoride, synthetic iodine, and sugar are then added and the substance is bleached to create the white finish. The process strips the salt of all nutrients and adds toxins that further harm the body.
Table salt causes blood pressure to rise in attempts to move the toxins out of the body. It also, most notably, causes bloating and indigestion, as the body needs 20 times more fluid to break down table salt than natural salt. In the long term, it can lead to diabetes, obesity, arthritis, cardiovascular complications, and many other diseases.
The decision to help your body by giving it natural salts is in your hands.
You can pick up unrefined sea salt and Himalayan salt at the farmers market and make sure that you are feeding yourself and your loved ones deliciously nutritious meals.
