Safe beaches: Strong community!

by Nate Bright

It is estimated that more than 100 people drown on the beaches in Costa Rica every year. Fortunately, the Costa Ballena region has trained, certified lifeguards on two of our most popular beaches: Playa Dominical and Playa Hermosa. We are very proud to say that these are two of the safest beaches in Costa Rica!

Our lifeguards successfully rescued more than 40 people in 2015 – and gave out thousands of warnings about dangerous conditions like rip currents, hidden rocks, and unusual swells. They are vigilant, dedicated, and serious about saving lives – and they work 9 hours a day for only about $20.

The Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguard program raises funds from local businesses and individuals to pay for lifeguard salaries, training and certification, equipment and tower maintenance. Six lifeguards at $20 each a day adds up to nearly $40,000 a year in salaries alone, so funding is always a top priority for the committee of volunteers. They accomplish this through community outreach ‘ambassadors’ who coordinate donations and sponsorship from local businesses, monthly fundraising parties with live music and raffle draws, and Paypal monthly subscription donations.

Like many parts of Costa Rica, our local economy is built almost entirely around tourism, and our beaches are one of the primary draws. So, whether you are a visitor to our beautiful area or one of the many locals who live, work, and play here, please consider making a one-time or monthly contribution at www.lifeguardscostaballena.com.

And SPREAD THE WORD! If having trained, certified lifeguards protecting our beaches is important to you, mention it to the businesses you frequent and encourage them to get involved by donating or hosting a fundraising event.
