Exploring and Fishing in the Sierpe River

by Jeane Brennan

Sierpe2The town of Sierpe, while acting as a staging area and jumping off point for Corcovado National Park excursions, diving and exploring on Caño Island and off shore fishing in Drake Bay, also offers access to incredible daytime activities in the beautiful and meandering Sierpe River. The word sierpe actually means serpent or snake’. Canals, mangrove forests, and farms line the river.

Turtles swimming, crocodiles sunning and beautiful birds soaring also add to the charm and tranquility of the Sierpe River.

Kayaking, boating, birding, wildlife photography and mangrove forest tours are popular river activities. Great fishing is also experienced in the Sierpe River. The river is not only used for entertainment and pursuing hobbies and special interests, but it is also used for transportation for those families and their animals living up and down the river shore. For most living along the river, a river boat with either a small engine or only oars is the only way to get to town. Fishing in the Sierpe River is always a great experience.

The tide plays a huge part in successful river fishing and the captains fishing out of Sierpe are the most knowledgeable about this constantly moving river where the tides change approximately every six hours.

There is a difference between river fishing and in-shore fishing. Common fish caught in the river include Mangrove Snapper, Snook, and Corvina or Sea Bass.

Among the many species of fish caught in-shore are Cubera Snapper, Snook, Rooster Fish, Mackerel and Golden Trevally. The location of in-shore fishing is at the mouth of the river before entering Drake Bay.
