Dreamy Conditions on the Ballena Coast
~ by Trevor Brown
I have chased waves from North America, through all of Central America, South America, and parts of Indonesia. Also, I’ve been fortunate to have experienced lots of different surf cultures and conditions. The more I travel and surf, the more I have come to appreciate what we have here.
The lack of crowds, friendly locals, and clean, tropical waters make Costa Ballena a true surfer’s paradise!
There are very few places on Earth that have water that is warm enough to comfortably surf in nothing but board shorts. While some places have seasons with warm water, cold currents move below the surface requiring a wetsuit. The water temperature is perfect in Costa Ballena all year round. You are never too hot or too cold. The ocean water is very clean in comparison to many areas in the world affected by pollution and contamination from nearby industries or cities. There is no worry of getting sick or infections from pollution here.
Though water on the Pacific Coast may look cloudy at times, it is just churning sand and sediment from the waves.
On the Ballena Coast and apart from the Christmas and Easter vacations, crowds are not an issue. With multiple surf breaks to choose from, you can always find some empty waves. If there are a lot of surfers in the water, as long as you are respectful, there shouldn’t be any problems. Locals in the area are friendly. Harsh localism and bad vibes are an issue at many surf breaks around the world, but not here.
Next time you are sitting on your board waiting for a wave, take a moment to be grateful of where you are. You are lucky enough to be surfing in a tropical paradise rimmed by coconut trees, lush jungle, and a friendly «pura vida» vibe.
Life is good!
