The fascinating underwaterworld of Caño Island
AUTHORS: Juliane Hilla and Jakob Bremer
Waking up with the tingling feeling in your stomach that today will bring something special, is always exciting. This sensation got even better with the warm welcome at Costa Rica Dive & Surf. Smiling people, good coffee, fresh juice, and delicious banana bread waited for us. Pablo, the divemaster, explained the most important goal: “Together, we will create the best possible day at Caño Island.”
Safety is of paramount importance for the tour; at any time, we could count on advice and a helping hand. During the walk to the boat through the Marino Ballena National Park, Pablo gave us information about the actual size of the park, which covers 5000 hectares of land and maritime life.
Once onboard, valuable items were stored into safety bags; everything was well organized! It was a one-hour drive to Caño Island, and captain Maykol made it special by stopping when a group of dolphins surrounded the boat.

Before we started snorkeling, Michael, the tour guide, explained a great deal about the animals we were going to see. He reminded us to be careful not to step on anything, especially the corals are susceptible to touch. We were pleasantly surprised that he used pineapple juice to clean the diving masks, instead of chemical detergents. Afterward, Michael guided us through the fascinating underwater world along the island.
Once in the transparent water, the first animal we spotted was a beautiful leatherback sea turtle. Fish like the red snapper, butterflyfish, rainbowfish, pufferfish, and as well a white-tipped reef shark appeared in our field of vision. In the second immersion, the water was topped by an even bigger shark, a different species of turtles, and a family of 8 stingrays.
After captain Michael and mariner Carlos brought us safe and comfy back to the beach, they spoiled us with a delicious, typical Costarrican dish.
When we asked Pablo what was most important about the tour, he replied happily: A SMILE IN YOUR FACE, CLEAR IN YOUR EYES AND HAPPINESS IN YOUR SOUL!
And we felt it! We have not experienced such a motivated and attentive team of tour guides in Costa Rica before.
