The first annual, Best Fest Festival, was held at Playa Ballena, off the Costanera Sur between Uvita and Ojochal, this past February 9th and 10th. On the venue, music groups such as the Werks, Pimps of Joytime and Ojo de Buey were present, as well as some of our local favorites like JamiSun and Ben Fagan and the Holy City Hooligans. Chuck Chastain, the festival organizer, was very pleased with the turnout for this year’s festival.
Over 500 people attended Saturday night’s concert and the music rocked the jungle until the early hours of the morning. It was a great atmosphere all weekend long as festival attendees walked the beach, surfed the waves, and practiced yoga as far as the eye could see.
As for the logistics of the event, 16 volunteers helped clean up the beach and clear the festival grounds, and without their help, Chuck says it would not have been possible. A few business owners from the region were present, such as Wayne Potter, who presented his artwork. Uvita’s, The Flutterby House, also had a camping site, which they lit up with tiki torches throughout the night. There were close to 50 campers who enjoyed the camp grounds.
Overall, Best Fest went off, nearly, without a hitch, except a generator that got crabby and needed to be replaced. The festival was a success, as this year’s goal was to heighten awareness and get more people to come discover Costa Ballena. As popularity of the Festival grows, next year we can be sure to expect even more in attendance! We look forward to another great Festival that will surely enrich our community.
