Interview with The G-String Cowboys
Three gringo expats living in the Southern Pacific Zone of Costa Rica:
A guitar-pickin’ old-school country singer/songwriter from Kansas; an electric rock-blues-swing lead guitarist/singer from Boston; and a singing multi-instrumentalist itinerant rock tribute band veteran turned session artist from Everywhere, Canada; each of them brought with him to his adopted country a boatload of broad experiences, and a true passion for making meaningful music.
When they started jamming together as a trio, they had no problem at all melding their individual talents and perspectives into a unique and cohesive sound.
Pure & Natural Costa Rican Chemistry!
With occasional variation, the lineup is Ken Nickell on acoustic guitar and vocals, Shorty Hill on electric guitar and vocals, and Tim Rath on bass and vocals. Their style is generally Eclectic Americana, with strong elements of country, blues, rock, and swing; and, for sure, influences from other musical genres.
About half of any G-String Cowboys live performance features original material – real songs with a beginning, a middle, and an end, with memorable melodies and powerful lyrics.
The delivery is slightly improvisational, the instrumentation clean, and the vocals strong.
The other half of The G-String Cowboys live repertoire is a unique combination of cover tunes from great artists ranging from Hank Williams to Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and a whole bunch of others. If you really need to boil it down to a single descriptive word: Smooth!
So far, the recordings of the G-String Cowboys have focused on the songwriting talents of Ken Nickell. The band is about to release their first CD of their original material titled “Live at The Bamboo Room”, recorded in Ojochal, Costa Ballena.
Also, Tim continues pursuing his recording and production interests in his Painted Lizard Studio, which includes G-String Cowboys songs.
