Cacao is considered by ancient civilizations to be a gift from the gods, and is still loved around the world today.
From the aromatic sweet smell of chocolate to the bitter taste of the beans and the satisfying crunch, cacao engages all our senses.
Many cultures, like the Mayans, have used this plant as a portal to the spirit world, bringing a higher perspective into their lives.
During cacao ceremonies, each cup of frothy hot chocolate opens the heart chakra both physically, with its anti-inflammatory properties, and energetically. The effect is an open heart and a body boosted by essential minerals such as iron and magnesium.
Cacao has many other health benefits, like increased dopamine levels, and contributes to a happier, healthier mind, body, and spirit.
Costa Rica is blessed with an abundant supply of cacao trees with their unmistakable oval cacao pods growing straight off the trunk. The pods are multicolored with bright reds, yellows, greens, oranges, and sometimes even purples and pinks. Inside the pod, each seed is perfectly wrapped by velvety sweet and delicious white pulp, and they are fermented and lightly roasted to bring out the flavor of dark chocolate.
We can bring the magic of cacao back into our daily lives by consuming it with the intention of opening the heart. To make it yourself, simply steep a cup of your favorite tea or hot water, add a teaspoon of cacao powder, found at your local market, and sweeten to taste with nature’s own honey, stevia or maple syrup.
To taste ecstasy, add a dash of your homemade coconut milk, which we learned how to make in the last edition. For a frothy finish, blend for 10 seconds on low and serve immediately. As an added bonus, pray over your sacred cup of medicine and hold your wishes as truth and reality as you sip your elixir.
With a full heart, ¡Salud!
